The Need For A CCTV Survey

Rico Camera's

Because drains are largely hidden from view, the exact cause and nature of the problem may not be immediately apparent. That's why inspection and diagnosis is a very important part of our service.

With the passage of time and usage, drains and sewers can deteriorate. It may take several years, but drains can suffer as a result of many factors such as ground movement, poor construction, tree root invasion etc. The Jetco CCTV survey is specifically designed to investigate a drain's condition for the following reasons:

Problem Solving - Sometimes, nothing less than a visual assessment of a problem will meet the need. In such cases, television provides the full picture. CCTV surveys of drains, pipes, and sewers provide an accurate and cost effective way to detect problems to the source and help establish the most practical remedial options.

Problem Prevention - When problems with drains or pipework are to be avoided at all costs, CCTV enables potential faults to be identified before they become a problem.

The CCTV Surveying Process

A CCTV Survey can be carried out with the minimum of fuss and disruption. The process is as follows:

STEP 1

  • The pipeline is thoroughly cleaned with High Pressure water to remove all slime and gravel so that the camera can clearly view defects that may exist.

STEP 2

  • Camera Inserted into Drain
  • The CCTV camera is introduced into the drain via the appropriate access point and pushed or powered through the pipe.

STEP 3

  • Operator Observes & Records
  • As the camera travels along the pipe, the image is relayed to a monitor screen in the truck. The operator will then log any structural defects and record the location of each along the pipe length. See Buchen or Cue's to view the trucks.

STEP 4

  • Survey Report Provided
  • The survey report is then provided which lists the type and location of any defect. This can be backed up with photographs and video. Electronic logging of defects is also available for importation into Hansons IMS.

Structural Faults That CCTV Can Reveal

There are many different types of structural defects that can occur in underground pipework.

  • Defect: fractured pipe
    Cause: Pressure above ground
Consequences: Cracks or fractures in drains leak water which destabilises the surrounding soil. This will result in further damage to the drain and even subsidence to buildings near by.

  • Defect: collapsed drain
    Cause: Several possible causes
Consequences: Drain becomes unusable with high likelihood of frequent blockages, environmental damage, and building subsidence.

  • Defect: tree roots
Cause: Roots Fine hairlike roots seeking moisture
Consequences: Fine Hairline roots penetrate small cracks. These fine roots grow and expand in size to put even greater pressure on the crack, in time the crack develops in to a major fracture and resulting in pipe collapse. Material (paper & fat) flowing thru the drain will snag on the roots causing continual blockages.

Drain Layout And Location

If CCTV reveals a structural fault, its exact above ground location can be pinpointed using sonar tracing equipment. This is often used to verify the position or even the existence of underground drains, utility lines or buried manholes. Enabling the provision of accurate drain layouts. Sonar tracing is the ideal solution when site plans simply aren't available.
