Kills Sewer Roots - "Reliably, efficiently and economically"

If you are having persistent problems with root intrusion into your sewer system, chemical treatment using a soil fumigant may provide the money-saving way to inhibit this troublesome growth.

Frequently Asked Question

  • Which comes first - the root or the leak?
Relatively high humidity and temperature in sewers create vapour pressure. Vapour condenses outside joints moistening the soil, attracting roots. Roots follow the vapour through the joints tiny pore spaces by adding microscopic cell-onto-cell at the root tip, as all roots grow. Roots expand and separate the joints. Through the openings, water and silt infiltrate sewers.

  • Doesn't mechanical root-cutting do the job?
No. It makes the roots grow faster, denser and thicker. Stoppages occur more frequently with costly overflow and emergency calls.

If you have ever pruned a tree, you know that after each pruning the tree develops new growth just below each cut.

That's what happens when you call out a Drain layer to cut the roots from you sewer line. He's simply pruning the roots and causing them to grow back stronger, bigger and denser than ever. Bigger roots break the pipe or open the joint even more.
Soaking, spraying or foaming with WILKILL kills roots and prevents regrowth for two or more years, to save you future repair work. To keeps roots out of sewers, use WILKILL.

  • Can WILKILL help prevent stoppages in my sewer system?
Yes, but only against roots. If you place solid foreign objects or lots of grease down the line, WILKILL will not dissolve them or clear the stoppages. However, we have other effective methods of dealing with all such problems (feel free to contact us to talk about these options).

  • What are its benefits to me?
    · Reliable
    · Efficient
    · Economical
    · Free estimates and advice from our helpful team
    · Totally self contained
    · No Mess and no cleanup
    · Completely safe for you trees and plants

  • How long does WILKILL last and is it economical?
At least a year. But depending on the condition of the sewer pipe, WILKILL has been known to be effective for up to five years. Our research shows that WILKILL is the most efficient and cost effective method of solving root problems

  • How is WILKILL applied?
WILKILL is pumped down a polyethylene pipe, which has been inserted into the sewer line at the root affected area. The chemical is put into the line as a foam through the use of a special foaming machine.

It IS safe to use Wilkill on your plants and tree's, as it
only kills the roots
  • Is WILKILL safe for my trees and plants?
Yes. Wilkill is not systemic. That means it will only kill the roots growing in, and immediately around the sewer pipe. The chemical does not continue up the root system to harm the trees or plants.

  • What do I need to do to stop the roots returning?

  • Preventative maintenance:
    • Regular CCTV (closed circuit television) inspections by arrangement
    • Re-treatment recommended every 2 years to minimise further structural damage due to root regrowth

  • How long does it takes to apply and dispose the roots?
Typically 500 to 600 metres per day, then 3 to 6 months for the roots to rot and drop. Often dead roots may hang in the line but can be easily removed by High Pressure Draincleaning.
  • Who uses WILKILL?
    • Councils Including:
      • Wellington City Council
      • Upper Hutt City Council
      • Porirua City Council
      • Masterton District Council

  • What Applications can it be used on?

  • NB: WILKILL is designed for sewers, not for stormwater drains
    • Total blockage with roots
    • Very thick mats
    • Willows, palms, flax and other species

  • Is WILKILL Patented:
Fully patented, and officially approved by Watercare Services Ltd (Water and Drainage operators for Auckland Regional Council) for sewer use and with no effect on treatment plants.
  • Does WILKILL have a warranty?
YES, Against root regrowth, provided re-treatment program is adopted.

  • The WILKILL Story
Root intrusion into sewers is probably the most destructive single element in sewer maintenance.
Roots have proved able to enter wherever vapour moisture can pass through a pipe joint, even though well caulked, by forming a single cell at a time at the root tip small enough to penetrate the joint.
University experiments made use of a fumigant consisting of the active ingredients of Metam and Dichlobenil. Combined with a surfactant that emulsifies greases and slimes, the treatment cleans the roots, enabling them to absorb the chemicals.

Metam kills the root growth quickly by destroying the cells of the root. Dichlobenil is absorbed into the root system and pipe surfaces with the Metam, inhibiting regrowth for an extended period.

University tests have disclosed the value of using active ingredients. Cities in America and Australia have been using this system with good results for more than 20 years.
